matisse.jpg (91669 bytes) Matisse and the Fauves
The Fauves held their first exhibition in a photographer's studio in Paris in 1905 where an art critic called the participants - 'fauves'- wild animals.  They used the outdoors for their subjects, colors applied in new imaginative ways, less detail, obvious spontaneity in brush strokes.  They waged a battle for freedom from the tyranny of the art establishment. Henri Matisse, the most innovative, influental, and productive of the Fauves said his one desire, "was to give pleasure."  This TimeLine explores the relationship between the artists, and examines the work of Matisse.
